Born in Finland in 1953, artist, designer, teacher and musician, Vesa Peltonen has had a varied and rewarding career in the art field. He is nationally recognized for his serigraph prints. Notable limited edition print commissions have been; to design an image depicting Ballet dancer, Karen Kain and also one relating to Dr. Jane Goodall, commemorating her 30 years studying animals in the wild, which was specially made for ‘ZooCheck Canada’. Both of these were co-signed also.

After attending Ontario College of Art, in Toronto, Peltonen moved back to Thunder Bay to work as an art director for Thunder Bay Television. He pursued his career further, moving to Winnipeg to work for an advertising agency. He has also worked with Great Canadian Print Publishing Company to design serigraphs that were sold internationally. Peltonen received a degree in Fine Arts from University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Education degree from Lakehead University.

Peltonen has taught for most institutions of learning here in Thunder Bay, as a sessional lecturer for Distance Education, Visual Arts, Lakehead University and the Faculty of Education, Distance Education Department. Peltonen was an Advisor for the Ontario Arts Council, for juring Arts Education programs. He has also been a curriculum writer for Confederation College under contract.   He was a senior Art and History instructor for 3 years in Pikangikum First Nation high school.

He is also noted for designing glass artworks, sold internationally by Prestige Glass, Elliott Lake. He has received numerous awards over the years for his artwork and designs.

His Solo Exhibition titled ‘Highway Fusion’ is a series of images using different mediums, exploring his ‘obsession’ with highways. It stems partly in conjunction with his travels, mostly in N.W. Ontario and also travels abroad. His images uncover the reality of lines and shapes that is a part of our perception. The art is often a spontaneous process with images that are whimsical to images revealing human technology and their relationship with nature. This is often depicted in how the highway is a metaphor of our domination in this association. In many images there is simply the matter of fact reality that we are apart of nature. Peltonen wants you to view the art as one complete unity. Clearly, the most striking part of this art is the alluring colour and expression.

He has won the City of Thunder Bay Annual CULTURAL & HERITAGE Award for VISUAL ART in 2006, for his work in making art an integral part of all community sectors.
He has had his lyrics/poetry published.
He is presently 2008-teaching in Kasabonika First Nation in N.W. Ontario & -off & on over 8 yrs. has taught native students in high school to help them in art/given Guidance help.
